Step by step instructions

1. register your company

Every company must register once in German Ports!

After registering, you can set up branches and add users in German Ports yourself.

Here register directly

2. inform your customers

Inform your customers in good time that they must also use German Ports. Only registered customers can receive and manage pick-up authorisations for import containers.

Also important: your customers must also inform the next party authorised to collect containers. This ensures a safe and uncomplicated handover.

Here go to the customer letter

3. connect technically to

As a company, you can connect technically via XML or REST. Use the following documentation for this:

First take a look at the XML Implementation Guide.

With the Claim transfer you can perform the following actions:

  • Passing on of a collection right to a subcontractor.
  • Withdrawal of a collection right previously passed on to a subcontractor.
  • Rejection or return of a collection right received.
  • Utilisation a collection right to collect a container.

In this case, the response message is the Notification Message (XML).

The notification message (XML) fulfils two essential functions: Receipt and Notification.

  • Receipt: Confirmation of processing (ClaimStatus: Accepted, Rejected, Pending).
  • Notification: Actively informs involved parties about changes.

Take a look at the REST Implementation Guide to understand interfaces and processes.

Alternatively, you can use the WebUI to manually edit and manage the exemptions.

FAQ Freight forwarders and logisticians in general

Yes, there is an upload template for this. A bulk upload is provided for large companies in particular. Details can be found in the User Guide.

Yes, registration is not the same as concluding a contract. Registration is the first step. German Ports can only be actively used once a contract has been concluded with dbh/DAKOSY. Both steps are necessary.

The container operator (usually the shipping company). The shipping company transmits the first pick-up right to the respective party in the transport chain - e.g. freight forwarder or logistics service provider - using the GP-ID.

No, activation is automatic upon receipt. As soon as a company receives a collection right, it can work with it or pass it on. No separate activation is necessary.

Yes, the original releasing company (e.g. shipping company or freight forwarder) can actively withdraw the collection right as long as it has not yet been utilised.

Via the GP ID, VAT number or company name. German Ports offers a search function in the interface that you can use to search for registered companies. Important: Only registered partners appear there.

Not in the strict sense. Favourites functions are not provided. There is currently no function for permanently linking partners or favourites lists. The selection must be made again each time rights are assigned.

Yes, the REST API documentation is available in German and English on the website germanports.com available.

Technically yes, if supported by the respective IDP. A driver can be authorised for several registered companies via driver recognition, e.g. at Conroo. German Ports itself does not manage any driver data.

The booking is technically rejected. The terminal system checks in real time whether the booking company has a valid pick-up authorisation for the container. If this is not the case, an error message appears and the booking is not possible.

The slot becomes technically invalid and a new booking must be made by the new rights holder. The system checks again at check-in at the terminal. If the valid pick-up authorisation is missing, access is denied.

FAQ for freight forwarders

There are various options for freight forwarders to use German Ports. In addition to using an EDI interface, existing systems (CODIS, IMP, BIT) can also be used to connect to German Ports. You can also connect the TMS you are using. In addition, all registered freight forwarders always have the option of using the web interface once the client has been set up

Firstly, everyone has to go through the registration process on our German Ports - German Ports page. There you can also tell us how you would like to use German Ports. You will then receive a signed contract and send it back to us. Only then will dbh and/or DAKOSY carry out the set-up.

German Ports will be mandatory from 1 October 2025 when the statutory regulation comes into force.

As a freight forwarder, you should check the technical and functional documentation provided on the website. If necessary, arrange an onboarding appointment with the project team at an early stage. As soon as your systems have been customised, the integration can be tested flexibly.

Yes, a contract concluded with dbh allows rights management for Bremerhaven and/or Wilhelmshaven and a contract concluded with DAKOSY for Hamburg.

No, carriers cannot create or cancel pick-up rights.

As a freight forwarder, you can pass on (pass), revoke (revoke), return (return) or use (use) pick-up authorisations yourself. Depending on the connection, these functions can be triggered via the interface or in the web connection. You can find more detailed instructions in our user guides.

No, a collection right can only be given to a logistics company.

The collection right can be withdrawn by "revoke". The logistics provider then loses the collection right and the freight forwarder has it again.

Yes, as long as the right is not in "USED" status, it can be withdrawn up to itself.

No. Each party can only see from whom the right came and to whom it was passed on.

In "Pending Inspection Status", the pick-up right is "frozen" by the terminal because an inspection of the container has been ordered. The right cannot be managed during this status.

FAQ for railway operators

In addition to the option of connecting via an EDI interface, it will also be possible to utilise previously used systems and applications (such as CODIS). In general, the web interface will be made available to every participant of German Ports. A residual connection is also possible by arrangement.

No, in the railway process German Ports always checks for the respective legal entity.

No, the pick-up right via German Ports only applies to full containers that are imported into the country via the standard import process.

By arrangement, RUs can also generate collection rights in German Ports. For this purpose, please contact your contractual partner bilaterally regarding the extended facility.

FAQ for inland vessels

In addition to the option of connecting via an EDI interface, it will also be possible to continue using the systems and applications (such as binntelligent) you have been using up to now. In general, German Ports will provide each participant with a web interface. A REST connection is also possible by arrangement.

No, German Ports always checks the respective legal entity in the inland shipping procedure.

No, the pick-up rights via the German ports only apply to full containers that are brought into the country via the normal import procedure.

FAQ for trucks

The following conditions must be met for a container to be collected:

  • The company booking the slot must have a valid pick-up right in German Ports. Only companies that have been assigned a pick-up right can book a slot for the corresponding container.
  • Upon arrival at the terminal, the driver must be able to clearly identify himself. Depending on the terminal, this is done via an IDP system (e.g. Conroo, Passify, ImpalaID).

The data relevant for collection will be processed and forwarded via German Ports from the cut-off date.

Yes, the familiar processes with Truckgate remain in place. However, in order to be able to book a slot in Truckgate, you must first be registered as an authorised driver in German Ports. Authorised users of your company can do this in German Ports. Only then is it possible to book a slot via TruckGATE. All further processes after the slot booking correspond to the current process.

Can the new driver still collect the container? Yes, it is generally possible to change drivers at short notice. As long as the slot booking is valid, another driver can also collect the container. However, the prerequisite is that the new driver presents proper identification at the terminal on arrival - e.g. via an IDP system, depending on the terminal requirements.

Each company can see which pick-up rights are assigned to it at any time. Designated users have access via the German Ports web interface. Alternatively, the display can also be integrated into the company's own Transport Management System (TMS), depending on the technical implementation.

A pick-up right is required for all import containers and loaded containers that are to be picked up at the terminal. Empty containers are not part of German Ports.

Direct access to the German Ports platform is only possible for administrators and named users of your company. As a driver, you receive all relevant information about the pick-up - such as slot bookings - via your existing communication channels, e.g. through your scheduling department or your own TMS.
